Video of our final space intervention at Classical High School

As we finished our collaborative work with Classical High School, we came in and shot a video of the students and teacher's reaction to the cardboard intervention project. Our goal is to make these small scale interventions that could be place around campus to create an alternative space for conversation and learning. We will be sumbitting our project to Architecture for Humanity's Open Architecture Network "Future Classroom" Challenge

Judy on working with Classical High School

This is one of the many projects that I am involved in, where I have been working with Judy Chang, Taijasa Jordan and Arthur Harsuvanakit from Architect and Industrial Design to discuss the problems education faces today. We are looking into using design thinking and implementing physical designs to help change learning environments in schools in Providence.

Designing a better future learning space now!

This is what I shared at "What We Do". This project started as a collaboration between 3 students, Arthur Harsuvanakit, Judy Chang and myself at the Rhode Island School of Design from different backgrounds (Architecture, Interior Architecture and Industrial Design) coming together to design the future learning space for a Architecture for Humanity competition. As we began doing research in the history of education and how schools are designed based on the philosophy of teaching and learning of the day. The most important and striking conclusion we made is that the changes in the physical space can never keep up with the changing in teaching and learning philosophy. This changed our approach to this project from this point on, we didn't want to fall into this ever ending cycle, where the design for the future is not going to be relevant in the near future.

Cardboard Brainstorm

This is us coming up with the next installation for the light filled space in between buildings. We are exploring how do we use sculptural elements to help diffuse light, redirect light, create shadows and create a sense of space within these rooms.

The material that we are going to use is recycled cardboard. Here we are coming up with ideas for cardboard based installation for the walls, ceilings and floor:

Milk/Juice Carton Fun

Since our upcoming project deals with the adaptive reuse of milk/juice cartons, I thought I'd upload a project I completed with two other lovely ladies for our Human Factors class.  Perhaps this can help stem our project.

The objective of the project was to design a chair prototype that will accommodate the user's (me) sitting posture.  Not only did the chair have to meet my body's ergonomic standard, the design has to portray me as an individual.  Well, since I'm big into reusing objects/materials and organic produce, my team decided to collage our chair out of discarded milk/juice cartons.

Yes, this basically means that our chair is composed out of paper.  We utilized the basic shape of the carton, and reconstructed each of the 80+ cartons used into a triangular prism, strong enough to hold two people!

It was quite a successful experiment!  And tremendous thanks to Bender's Cafe who helped us salvage these cartons!
